Introduction

Grishneshwar Temple is one of the oldest and most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is revered as the twelfth and last Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, holding great religious significance for devotees.

Location

The temple is located in Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra, just 1.5 km from the famous Ellora Caves and about 30 km from the city center. Its proximity to historic monuments adds to its cultural importance.

Deity & Jyotirlinga

Grishneshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here in the form of a Jyotirlinga. The Shivling is housed in the Garbhgruh, measuring approximately 17 feet in length and width, and devotees are allowed to enter the sanctum for darshan.

Architecture & Sculptural Features

Built using black stone, the temple spreads over an area of around 44,000 sq. ft. The temple has 24 beautifully carved pillars featuring Yaksha sculptures, symbolizing their role in bearing the weight of the temple. One pillar displays a unique carving of an elephant and Nandi, representing the Hari-Har Milan (union of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva).

Unique Carvings & Art

A distinctive feature of this temple is the white stone carving on its upper structure, depicting Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya seated on Nandi, and Goddess Ganga on Shiva’s forehead, clearly visible from the southern entrance.

Historical & Spiritual Significance

The temple was reconstructed in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holker and is now a nationally protected monument. Grishneshwar Temple stands as a symbol of devotion, rich heritage, and spiritual unity, attracting pilgrims from across the country.
