Description
Introduction
Kainchi Dham, also known as Shri Neem Karori Baba Ashram, is one of the most revered spiritual centers in India. Located in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, the ashram is dedicated to Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj Ji), a great saint known for his boundless compassion, miracles, and teachings of love, service, and devotion to God. Kainchi Dham attracts devotees from all over the world, including renowned spiritual seekers and global figures.
Location and Setting
Kainchi Dham is situated near Bhowali, about 17 km from Nainital, in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. Nestled amidst lush green hills and flowing rivers, the ashram lies on the banks of the Kshipra River, creating a serene and spiritually uplifting environment.
Divine Origin of Kainchi Dham
The spiritual foundation of Kainchi Dham was laid on May 25, 1962, when Neem Karoli Baba visited the area and sanctified the land with his divine presence. Across the river was a dense forest where saints like Shri Somvaree Baba and later Premi Baba had meditated and performed sacred rituals. Maharaj Ji sat upon a sacred rock (shila), blessed the land, and instructed that the area be cleared and developed for spiritual purposes.
Establishment of Temples
Under the guidance of Neem Karoli Baba, several temples were established within the ashram:
Hanuman Temple, built over an ancient sacrificial fire pit (havan kund), forms the spiritual heart of Kainchi Dham
Shrines of Shri Lakshmi Narayan, Lord Shiva, Maa Parvati, Shri Ganesh, and Kartikeya
Shri Vaishnavi Devi Temple in the Kirtan Bhawan
Shri Vindhyavasini Devi Temple, consecrated on June 15, 1973
The sacred date of June 15 was divinely ordained by Maharaj Ji for the consecration of Kainchi Dham and its temples.
Ashram Development and Cottages
An Advaita Ashram was developed by clearing dense forests and leveling rocky land. Several cottages were built for devotees and named Vishnu Kuti, Krishna–Balaram Kuti, Govind Kuti, and others. All construction was carried out without formal architectural plans, solely based on Maharaj Ji’s instructions.
Maharaj Ji had foretold:
“Here, an ashram and temples will be built whose fame will spread throughout the world.”
Samadhi Mandir of Neem Karoli Baba
After Maharaj Ji’s Mahasamadhi in 1973, a Samadhi Mandir was constructed over his sacred Asthi Kalash. Later, with divine inspiration and under the guidance of Shri Siddhi Ma, a grand temple housing the idol of Neem Karoli Baba was built in 1975. The temple took its present form organically, without a blueprint or architect, as if guided by Maharaj Ji himself.
Annual Kainchi Dham Festival
The Kainchi Dham Pratishtha Diwas, celebrated every year on June 15, marks the consecration of the ashram. Thousands of devotees gather for bhajans, kirtans, prayers, and the distribution of prasad, making it one of the most significant spiritual events in the region.
Spiritual Significance
Kainchi Dham is a center of bhakti (devotion), seva (selfless service), and love for all beings—core teachings of Neem Karoli Baba. The ashram is believed to radiate immense spiritual energy, and devotees experience peace, transformation, and divine grace through sincere devotion.

Kainchi Dham – Shri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram stands as a sacred beacon of love, faith, and divine presence.
