Introduction
Sri Ekambareswarar Temple is a renowned and ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Ekambareswarar. It is celebrated for its grand scale and exceptional architectural beauty.

The temple is located in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, a city famous for its historic temples and spiritual heritage.
Deity & Religious Importance
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva (Ekambareswarar). The temple complex also houses the Nilathingal Thundam Perumal Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which is one of the 108 Divya Desams, making the site sacred to both Shaivites and Vaishnavites.
Architecture & Temple Complex
Spread over 25 acres, Sri Ekambareswarar Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India. It features four massive gateway towers (gopurams), with the southern gopuram rising 11 storeys high. The temple includes several magnificent halls, most notably the thousand-pillared hall built during the Vijayanagar period.
Historical Significance
The temple is believed to have existed since 600 CE and is mentioned in classical Tamil Sangam literature. The present stone structure was built by the Chola dynasty in the 9th century, with later expansions carried out by the Vijayanagar kings.
Sanctum & Festivals
The sanctum sanctorum houses a sacred Shiva lingam and an image of Lord Shiva. The inner precinct contains many Shiva lingams, including a Sahasra Lingam with 1,008 sculpted lingams. The temple celebrates many festivals, with Panguni Brahmotsavam, held for ten days during March–April, being the most important.
