Description
Introduction
Shri Banke Bihari Mandir is a famous Hindu temple in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to Lord Krishna (Banke Bihari Ji). The deity is worshipped in a unique and deeply devotional form.
Origin of the Deity
The idol of Banke Bihari Ji was divinely granted to Swami Haridas by Radha–Krishna themselves. After appearing before him, the divine couple merged into a single charming black idol, which is worshipped today.
Swami Haridas Ji
Swami Haridas Ji was born in 1478 AD near Aligarh and was a great saint, musician, and devotee of Lord Krishna. He is believed to be the incarnation of Lalita Sakhi, a close associate of Radha Rani.
Nidhivan & Divine Appearance
Swami Haridas meditated and sang devotional music in Nidhivan. There, Lord Krishna and Radha appeared before his disciples in divine form, later merging into a single form at Swamiji’s request.
Temple History & Architecture
Initially, the deity was worshipped near Nidhivan. The present temple was constructed in 1862 AD in Rajasthani architectural style by the Goswamis.
Worship & Spiritual Significance
The worship (sewa) of Banke Bihari Ji is unique and includes Shringar, Rajbhog, and Shayan. Continuous darshan is avoided as it is believed prolonged eye contact may overwhelm devotees. The temple attracts thousands of devotees daily.
