Introduction
Shri Vitthal Rukmani Temple, located in Pandharpur near Solapur, Maharashtra, is one of the most important pilgrimage centers dedicated to Lord Vitthal (Vithoba), a form of Lord Vishnu/Krishna, and his consort Goddess Rukmini.
Location & Sacred River
The temple is situated on the holy banks of the Chandrabhaga (Bhima) River. A dip in this river is believed to wash away sins and grant spiritual purity.
Religious Significance
Pandharpur is the main center of worship for Vithoba, especially among the Warkari sect of Maharashtra. Lord Vitthal is worshipped as Panduranga, the loving deity of devotees.
Temple Architecture
The main shrine is a five-storey structure with a pyramidal spire. The idol of Lord Vitthal stands on a brick, with hands on hips, flanked by Jaya and Vijaya. The temple complex also includes a beautiful portico and sacred halls.
Rukmini Mandir
The Rukmini Temple, located nearby on the riverbank, is dedicated to Goddess Rukmini. According to legend, she performs penance here and is worshipped separately from Lord Vitthal.
Vishnupada Temple
The Vishnupada Shrine enshrines the footprints of Lord Vishnu/Krishna on rock. During monsoon, the temple partially submerges, enhancing its divine aura.
Legend of Lord Vitthal
The temple is closely associated with Saint Pundalik, whose devotion to his parents pleased Lord Vishnu. The Lord stood on a brick waiting for him, giving rise to the unique form of Vithoba – the Lord on a brick.

Daily rituals begin early morning and continue till night. The temple comes alive during Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi, when thousands of Warkaris walk to Pandharpur singing bhajans.
