Introduction

Sabarimala Temple is one of the most famous and sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is known for its strict traditions and spiritual discipline followed by devotees.

Location

The temple is located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, amidst dense forests and hills, creating a deeply spiritual and serene environment.

Deity & Worship

The presiding deity is Lord Ayyappa, worshipped in a celibate (Naishtika Brahmachari) form. Devotees observe a 41-day vratham (austerity period) before undertaking the pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage Traditions

Entry to the temple requires strict adherence to customs such as wearing black or blue clothes, walking barefoot, and climbing the 18 sacred steps (Pathinettampadi) to reach the sanctum.

The temple is mainly open during Mandala Kalam, Makaravilakku, and Vishu seasons. Millions of pilgrims visit during the Mandala–Makaravilakku period.
