Introduction

History & Origin

The Gangotri Temple was built in the 18th century by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. It stands close to the sacred Bhagirath Shila, where King Bhagirath is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva to bring the river Ganga to earth.

The pujaris and priests of the Gangotri Temple belong to the nearby village of Mukhwa. The holy water from Gangotri is carried to offer to Lord Shiva during important rituals.
