Introduction

Maa Ambika Shaktipeeth Temple, also known as Virat Shaktipeeth Temple, is a highly revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Sati in her form as Ambika. It is one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas, which hold immense significance in Hindu mythology and Shakta tradition.

Location

Ambika Virat Shaktipeeth is located in Virat village, near Bharatpur, Rajasthan. The temple lies approximately 90 km from Jaipur, making it an important pilgrimage destination in the region.

Presiding Deities and Mythological Significance

According to Hindu beliefs, the small toes of Goddess Sati’s feet fell at this sacred site. Hence, Goddess Sati is worshipped here as Maa Ambika, while Lord Shiva is revered in the form of Amriteshwar, meaning the nectar of immortality.

Legend of the Shakti Peethas

The origin of the Shakti Peethas is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. Lord Brahma performed a great yajna to please Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. Goddess Shakti emerged separately from Shiva and assisted Brahma in the creation of the universe. Later, Brahma wished to reunite Shakti with Shiva.

As part of this divine plan, King Daksha, the son of Brahma, performed several yajnas to obtain Shakti as his daughter, who was born as Sati. However, Daksha disapproved of Sati’s marriage to Lord Shiva. When Daksha organized a grand yajna, he deliberately did not invite Shiva.

Despite Shiva’s reluctance, Sati attended the yajna, where Daksha openly insulted Lord Shiva. Unable to tolerate the humiliation of her husband, Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. Enraged by her death, Lord Shiva assumed his fierce form Veerabhadra, destroyed the yajna, and beheaded Daksha.

Overwhelmed with grief, Shiva carried Sati’s body and wandered across Aryavartha, performing the cosmic dance of destruction known as Tandava. To stop this devastation, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra, cutting Sati’s body into pieces. These body parts fell at various locations across India and nearby regions, and each place became a sacred Shakti Peetha.
